I know this might be too late for some of you, but can I ask that you avoid haunted houses this Halloween?
Some of you may have already visited one. I don’t plan to condemn you. I admit, I went to one in high school (professional one) and also walked through an elementary school one when I was that age or middle school. Haha, I remember hoping that they wouldn’t scare me in the younger one. In the professional one, I just hoped that guy with the chainsaw wasn’t going to make any sudden movements as I huddled with my girlfriends.
I get it, people want to have fun and take part in something that has become a tradition. Sadly, walking through a haunted house is actually how you get into the mood and spirit of Halloween.
But I must warn you, subjecting your spirit to fearful encounters and allowing yourself to take in gruesome images will be damaging to you.
I already know I am sensitive to images. I have always been sensitive to visual encounters because I am a seer. I have experienced unpleasant moments at the hands of demons when I saw into the spirit realm. I have also been bound by the spirit of fear and even haunted by demonic encounters in life. I have been fortunate to find an amazing church that has helped me get in touch with amazing people who pray and do large or small amounts of deliverance. I have received small pieces of deliverance in quick prayer sessions at the alter call, corporate prayers from leaders during seminars, and even a weekend away focusing on it. I love getting free and no longer being restrained under negative spiritual influences. I even find myself lying in bed at night praying God would show me areas to pray for forgiveness or to remove something negative so I can be even more free. Sometimes the thing God asks me to pray is one little word but I feel my whole body unclench and relax as something loses it’s power over me when I do it. It is the best feeling and the most relaxing way to fall asleep! I even find myself doing it in traffic now. I love it.
Yet there is an opposite path into darkness and the things of Halloween assist people in its descent. When you go to a haunted house, what are you expecting? You are hoping to be delighted by fear. You are hoping to see things that will startle and shake you. You are willingly entering into a state of fear and panic. Those are demonic realms. God doesn’t dwell in fear or panic. He is the rebuker of both.
2 Timothy 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear but one of power, of love, and of a sound mind.
The opposite of fear is love. I have been amazed to watch The Biggest Loser this season and actually hear one of the trainers teaching this principle. She talks about how we either operate from and are motivated by fear or love. She is always presenting the contestants with the choice and the reminder to choose love rather than fear. This is so true and biblical. When we are in fear, we cannot choose love.
1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.
If we live in a state of fear, we do not operate in love and show the expression of God. We don’t show the expression of the sacrifice of Jesus to love the world (John 3:16).
But isn’t this just one incident, on one night a year? Aren’t you being dramatic?
Well, I personally hate bondage. I hate that we would be given a spirit of power and love and we would submit to fear. Romans 8:15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
I also hate that I see people I love being afflicted by fear. There is someone in my life who is also a seer who made the mistake of visiting a haunted house to commemorate Halloween this year. They admitted they were haunted by the images and situations they witnessed and had a difficult night as a result. I know that people who are in touch with their seer gift will be more easily damaged. Yet, I want freedom for everyone.
Do me a favor. If you were considering visiting a haunted house this year and haven’t yet, would you just skip it? I don’t want you up at night remembering scary mental footage when you could be resting in peace. Stay in the light and do something that makes your heart feel good. Do something that gives life to your soul, not death.
And remember, we are supposed to dwell on things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and worthy of praise. These are the things that Philippians 4:8 wants us to think upon.
